If you are full of doubts regarding the activated carbon filters in your range hood, this is the article for you.

But let's start from the beginning: what do we mean by "activated carbon"? It is a plant-based material with a porous structure, endowed with extraordinary absorbing capacity. Thanks to this characteristic, activated carbon boasts a great filtering function useful for air purification.

Activated carbon filters are usually installed only in filtering hoods (also called recirculating hoods), which filter odors, vapors, impurities, and reintroduce purified air into the environment. To perform their function optimally, however, they must undergo a specific maintenance process.

Do you have a range hood with activated carbon filters and no one ever told you that maintenance is essential? Read below to learn the details.

Removing of carbon filters

Why should you maintain activated carbon filters?

The maintenance and cleaning of activated carbon filters are crucial for the effectiveness of their air filtering and purifying action. Without the proper care, you might encounter unpleasant risks:

  • Unpleasant odors: If the filter is not maintained, it will no longer absorb odors, and the indoor air will become stale and foul-smelling.
  • Filter malfunction: A saturated filter does not allow proper air recirculation, and the consequences can be harmful to our health.
  • Toxic fumes: Vapors and impurities from cooking can cause dizziness and nausea if inhaled over a long period.
  • Fire hazards: Grease that accumulates on the surface of the hood can, in the worst case, cause a fire when it comes into contact with gas flames.

But don't worry! I will give you all the tools you need to prevent any adversity. Come with me to discover all the positive aspects that perfect maintenance can bring.

Impact of proper maintenance

Let's see below the main positive effects of correct maintenance:

  • Maximum efficiency in air purification in the kitchen;
  • Elimination of the risk of intoxication due to inhalation of unhealthy substances;
  • Reduction of smoke, grease, vapors, and unpleasant odors;
  • Elimination of fire risks due to grease accumulation in the filters;
  • Improvement of indoor air quality.

These are just some of the beneficial effects that proper maintenance of activated carbon filters can bring. You will be able to cook in a purified and completely safe environment. Now it's time to understand how to really take care of our beloved filters. Read on to learn more.

Substitution of Carbon activated filters

Is it possible to wash activated carbon filters?

This is a very popular question, but to answer it properly, I will make some necessary premises to understand the different existing types. There are two different types of activated carbon filters:

  1. Standard filters: These are the most traditional ones with a lifespan of 6 months before needing replacement. These filters cannot be washed; once saturated, they must be replaced.
  2. Long Life filters: These are long-lasting filters, around 3 years, but they are not eternal and need to be regenerated periodically. The regeneration of the filters must be done every 3 months, and you will need to perform 6 specific steps to avoid damaging them.

So the answer is no for standard filters, and yes for regenerable Long Life filters, but with the right precautions. The lifespan of the filters may also change depending on the usage time of the hood itself.

In filtering hoods, there are usually two different filters: the first is the grease filter, while the second (located deeper) is the activated carbon filter. The grease filter must be cleaned regularly, either by hand or in the dishwasher.
