If you are reading this article, it means you are looking for an in-depth understanding of the grease filters in your kitchen range hood.

Maybe you want to better understand how to maintain the filters, or you simply want to know how they are made and how they work to expand your knowledge on the subject. So, I have good news for you!

In this article, I will cover all these topics to ensure you have no doubts after finishing your reading. Let's get started!

What is a grease filter?

A grease filter is an element found in all kitchen range hoods, whether they are extracting or recirculating. It is composed of a mesh or cell metal grid (depending on the model), usually made of aluminum or stainless steel. (See image).

Some models of grease filters are equipped with a button that helps to position the filter correctly, while others are simply inserted by snapping into place.

To fulfill the function of trapping grease and oils, which I will explain in detail shortly, the grease filters are positioned directly above the cooktop and represent the first filter that vapors and air encounter before being drawn into the appliance.

Fabric Grease Filters

Usually, when referring to grease filters, we think of the metal filters mentioned in the previous paragraph. However, there are also more economical grease filters: fabric grease filters.

Unlike metal grease filters, these filters are disposable and are made of a dense, spongy synthetic material that absorbs grease and oils present in the air and vapors rising from the cooktop. Once saturated with grease, these filters need to be replaced with new ones.

Due to this characteristic, despite their initial affordability, they may require frequent replacements depending on the intensity of range hood usage.

How Do Grease Filters Work?

The function of grease filters is the same for both extracting and recirculating range hoods: to trap grease particles and oils in their metal mesh structure.

When you turn on the range hood, the motor activates an airflow that is drawn into the appliance, passing through the metal filter, which acts as a barrier to capture and retain the grease particles and lipids present in the cooking vapors. This not only prevents grease from reaching critical components of the range hood, such as the fans and motor, but also helps to maintain the appliance's efficiency and reduce the frequency of required maintenance.

(This function of grease filters applies to both metal filters and fabric filters.)

How Long Does a Grease Filter Last?

Maintenance of Filters

Are grease filters eternal? The most accurate answer is: it depends. The lifespan of a grease filter can vary significantly based on the type of material, the intensity of range hood use, and the frequency of cleaning.

Disposable fabric filters need to be replaced every 3-4 months, while metal ones can last for years if kept clean and degreased regularly.

Failure to maintain metal filters can lead to the following issues:

  • Obstruction of the metal mesh and consequent inefficiency of the range hood suction;
  • Premature wear/saturation of the filter itself, requiring replacement with a new filter;
  • Increased maintenance costs of the range hood;
  • (In extreme cases) Fires caused by the flame coming into contact with grease on the surface.

→ Tip:

To avoid these unpleasant issues, check the grease filters at least once a month to see if they are excessively dirty and if it's time to clean them.

A short note: Nowadays, most range hoods are equipped with an internal timer that acts as an indicator of grease filter saturation. When the timer expires, a flashing LED or an illuminated indicator will alert you that it's time to clean the filters.

How to Clean Metal Grease Filters?

Cleaning dirty grease filte

Unlike traditional activated carbon filters, metal grease filters can and should be washed to maintain their grease-trapping function. There are two different methods to do this: by hand or in the dishwasher.

If you want to learn how to clean metal grease filters using these two methods, I have written a detailed article on this topic where you will find step-by-step procedures: "How to Clean and Degrease Range Hood Grease Filters" >>

In this article, I would like to remind you to:

  • Avoid using corrosive cleaners or metal brushes that can damage the filter.
  • Wash the filters at moderate and not excessively high temperatures to prevent deforming the filter surface.

How Often Should You Clean a Grease Filter?

Again, there is no one-size-fits-all answer, as the frequency of cleaning a grease filter depends on the intensity of kitchen use.

In a domestic setting, it is advisable to clean metal filters approximately every 2 months, while in more intense environments, such as a professional kitchen, it may be necessary to do so even more frequently.

Fabric filters, being disposable, do not require cleaning but must be replaced regularly.
